4sqwifi και κάτι ψιλά
Ahoi, άνθροποι αυτόυ του τέλειου blog(είναι δεν είναι?). Λοιπόν όσοι έιναι στα θέματα νέων apps για iOS ή γενικά όποιος είναι στα βαθιά αυτών των θεμάτων(μην μου πειτε οτι ξέρετε και Objective C…) θα το ‘φχαριστηθεί το post.(Η αγωνία αυξάνεται…) ΝΑΙ! μα και βέβαια δεν μιλάω για casual games αlά iOS αλλά μιλάω για το 4sqwifi. FYI; 1. Είναι ένα app ΟΧΙ παιχνίδι. 2. Κλείνει η παρένθεση.
OK σοβαρά τώρα… Τι είναι το 4sqwifi? Αχέμ… Η όλη φιλοσοφία γύρω του είναι το πανταχού παρών και χωρίς πληρομή internet. Το interface είναι αρκετά απλό. Ανόιγεις το app, κάνεις log-in με το account το 4square σου και TADAAA!!! http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/photo-21.png Έχεις ένα χάρτη που έχει τις κλασικές πινέζες του Google Maps. Αλλά τι κάνουν αυτές? Απλά πατήστε πάνω τους και θα βγάλει τα WiFi passwords από τα κοντινά μαγαζιά.

You know how it is – you’re desperate to get online in an unfamiliar place but with only secured WiFi hotspots around you. You don’t have their passwords, so what can you do?
Foursquare’s tips are often a good way of finding the password for a nearby hotspot, but it’s not very practical to browse through every nearby location until you find one. 4sqwifi is an iPhone app that makes the process much easier.
Open the app and it will display a list of nearby Foursquare locations, filtered to only include those that have a WiFi password in their tips. In theory, it’s that simple – open the app, find a nearby venue’s password, and jump online.
There are a few factors that hold the app back from being perfect, but that’s more to do with the data source than anything else. Passwords can change, so the information shared by Foursquare users may not be up to date. However, it’s better to have at least a chance of getting online than none at all, right? Also, sometimes it displays Foursquare tips where people complain about there being no WiFi at a location, although that could be useful in itself.

Foursquare, and most of the apps built on top of the location service’s developer platform, are great for exploring the physical world for entertainment. But a new iPhone app called 4sqwifi (download here) offers something that could help those of us who need to be productive remotely — a way to see nearby wifi locations, and the passwords to go with them.
Those of you who have been stuck needing to send an urgent work email while experiencing poor smartphone data reception will understand why this app is useful.
Yes, there are a bunch of other web sites and apps that try to help people find nearby wifi locations. All the ones I’ve seen have had various shortcomings, like outdated or incomplete databases, and no passwords. 4sqwifi solves this problem by finding Foursquare venues near to the user, then searching user tips related to getting WiFi connections (“free wifi,” “wifi password is…” etc.).
After downloading the app from the App Store, you log in with your Foursquare ID and see a list of all of the nearby venues. Click on any of the listings and you’ll see the name of the WiFi connection and its password. (Note that the app had some page-loading problems initially, although I got it to work.)
The team behind the app is a pair of young Greek entrepreneurs, Apostolos Papadopoulos and Giannis Poulakas. Apostolos tells me he got the idea while a senior in high school last winter, but had to finish his university exams before getting started over the summer. He’s going to school in Vienna now, and is continuing to develop the service. The app is currently free, but the team is exploring business models like an in-app payment for an offline map of all of the wifi locations and passwords within a city.

Today two Greek entrepreneurs launched a new iPhone app called 4sqwifi, which uses the Foursquare API to find locations nearby that offer free WiFi, along with the WiFi’s passwords. The app gathers nearby venues, searching for keywords like “wifi” or “password,” and then displays only those venues. There are also a small percentage of false-positive tips that might pop up, like “password for men’s toilet.” But if you can deal with (read: laugh, man!) this margin of error, then you’ll enjoy this app. To use the 4sqwifi app, you must have a Foursquare username. If you’ve resisted using Foursquare for some time, this might just be the app that changes your mind.
4sqwifi works in the opposite way that Yelp does. Whereas you type in your zip code and Yelp tells you about cafes nearby (and you can do an emphasis on free WiFi), 4sqwifi saves you that extra step by just targeting free WiFi connections. “4sqwifi is mainly about social location awareness in an everyday’s life-hack thingy,” says co-creator Apostolos Papadopoulous, who worked on 4sqwifi with Giannis Poulakas. “Tips are user-generated and the best thing is that 4sqwifi works immediately with and in Foursquare’s community – worldwide.”

Το 4sqwifi δεν είναι τίποτα παραπάνω από μία εφαρμογή που εμφανίζει τα κοντινότερα venues που έχουν διαθέσιμο WiFi και το password του. Απλό, εύχρηστο, up to the point και δωρεάν.
Οι 2 παραπάνω φράσεις θα μπορούσαν να ήταν ένα tweet. Αρκούν όμως για να περιγράψουν πλήρως την εφαρμογή του, δικού μας, Απόστολου Παπαδόπουλου. Δεν θέλω όμως να σταθώ στην εφαρμογή καθεαυτή. Θέλω να εστιάσω κυρίως στην διαδρομή που ξεκίνησε από ένα tweet στις αρχές Ιανουαρίου, συνεχίστηκε στο AppCamp Greece, αναπτύχθηκε μέσα στο καλοκαίρι και τώρα, ακριβώς 11 μήνες μετά, έχει καταλήξει στην πρώτη θέση των Free Apps στο Ελληνικό App Store.
Η ιδέα του Απόστολου ήταν πολύ αυθόρμητη και, χωρίς δεύτερη σκέψη, την μοιράστηκε με τους followers του στο Twitter μέσα από το iPhone του. Η ιδέα αποδείχθηκε πολύ καλή και ταξίδεψε γρήγορα χάρη στα retweets που έγιναν. Μέρα με την μέρα, όλο και περισσότεροι χρήστες του Foursquare αποφάσιζαν να ανεβάσουν ως Tip το SSID και τον κωδικό του Wireless Network στο μέρος που βρισκόντουσαν.
6 μήνες αργότερα, διοργανώνεται το πρώτο Ελληνικό AppCamp και συγκεντρώνεται όλο το “Γαλατικό χωριό” των Ελληνικών startups για να αναπτύξει τις ιδέες του. Εκεί, το 4sqwifi θα αρχίσει να παίρνει σάρκα και οστά ως ένα standalone iOS application με τον Γεράσιμο Τσιάμαλο (aka @tsiger) να επιμελείται το design της εφαρμογής και τον Γιώργο Κράβα (aka @GKravas) να βοηθά στο development.
Στους μήνες που ακολούθησαν, ο Απόστολος συνέχισε την ανάπτυξη της εφαρμογής, το beta testing της και την αναζήτηση ιδεών για την βελτίωση της. Θυμάμαι χαρακτηριστικά την ημέρα που είχε έρθει στην Αθήνα, λίγο μετά το AppCamp και, μεταξύ άλλων nerdy θεμάτων, είχαμε συζητήσει εκτενώς για την εφαρμογή και τις προοπτικές εξέλιξης της.
Εχθές η εφαρμογή ανέβηκε στο App Store. Η Ελληνική κοινότητα την αγκάλιασε και μέσα σε λίγες ώρες βρέθηκε να “φιγουράρει” στην πρώτη θέση των Free Apps, πάνω από εφαρμογές όπως του Twitter, του Foursquare ή ακόμα και του Facebook Messenger. Το ταξίδι όμως της συγκεκριμένης εφαρμογής δεν έχει φτάσει στο τέλος της, μάλλον βρίσκεται ακόμα στην αρχή.
Υπάρχουν σίγουρα πολλές προοπτικές τις οποίες ο Απόστολος πρέπει να διερευνήσει. Ξέρει καλύτερα απ’ όλους μας τι προσθήκες χρειάζεται να γίνουν και, για να είμαι ειλικρινής, είμαι σίγουρος ότι ήδη σκέφτεται το επόμενο βήμα του 4sqwifi και τον τρόπο που θα αναπτυχθεί στο κοντινό μέλλον.

Να η έκπληξη… (κάποιοι μάλον το ξέρουν) είμαι ο αδερφός του. Έτσι ξέρω (συνήθως) από πρώτο χέρι τι ακολουθεί στη επόμενη version.
